Sounds of the Underground: Research Symposium with CSU and UC

Cal State LA graduate students and faculty from across CSU and UC campuses will showcase interdisciplinary methods in music research.  

  • 11:00-11:45 - Session 01 Graduate Students Showcase (Gregory Esparza and Christian Garcia)  

  • 12:00-12: 50- Session 02 Faculty Showcase – Sound and Image Archive Methods (Anguiano and Leal)  

  • 1:00-1:50 - Session 03 Faculty Showcase – Women in Music and Feminist Methods (Rios and Hernandez) 

  • 2:00-2:50 - Session 04 Public Scholarship Showcase — Independent Journalist Janice Llamoca 

  • 2:50-3:00 – Closing remarks 

Held across three days, Sounds of the Underground: Music Scenes in LA from the 1960s-2000s brings together Los Angeles-based scholars, cultural workers, and music creatives to unpack the underground sounds and deep cuts of LA’s diverse popular music soundscapes. 

Campus collaborators will include Dr. José Anguiano, Cal State LA Assistant Professor in the Honors College and the Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, the Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and the Rare Book School.
